Medway Girls Volleyball has had an annual Dig Pink game for many years. Dig Pink holds a very special place in the hearts of the volleyball community. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women. In the United States, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. So many members of our community are impacted by this disease: mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and many friends.
Medway girls volleyball partners with the Sideout foundation, a nonprofit organization that does research and provides care for people with metastatic breast cancer. Over the past 12 years, Medway Girls volleyball has raised $65,589 to the side out foundation’s cause. All of the money that we have raised from selling Dig Pink t-shirts, tribute ribbons, and bake sales and raffles go directly to the SideOut foundation. They conduct their own precision medicine research for real patients! They do the specific work and research to understand the molecular makeup of each metastatic breast cancer tumor. This allows for personal treatment plans adapted to the specific tumor. What makes the Side out foundation different from similar organizations is that they don’t just FUND the research, they DO the research.
On Friday, we faced Sutton in a 4 set match. Medway took 3 sets to earn the win! It was a great game where all players fought hard. We had 3 players reach double digit kills! Mackenzie Klaus with 10, Maeve Curley with 10 and Emma Copeland with 11! Charlotte George led the team in aces and digs! She had 8 aces and 15 digs. Our setter Lucy Mitchell had 32 assists! All of our players contributed to the special win of that night!
