The 2015 novel, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara follows the lives of four college student friends- Jude, Willem, JB, and Malcolm over several decades in New York as they navigate through life and the challenges that life throws at them. The novel focuses on the traumatic past and enduring agony of Jude St. Francis;, the book explores themes of trauma, intimate friendship, chronic pain, and the limits of love in overcoming abuse.
Starting as a story about four classmates from a New England college, the focus shifts to a detailed, decades-long focus on Jude, a brilliant lawyer haunted by horrific childhood trauma and explores suffering, self-harm, and abuse. The novel examines how severe trauma impacts mental and physical health, the resilience of friendship, and the concept of chosen family over the family of origin.
Jude St. Francis is highly successful but deeply broken and suffering from chronic pain. Willem Ragnarsson is an aspiring actor and kind friend who acts as Jude’s main support. JB Marion is a painter whose relationship with the group becomes strained over time. Malcolm Irvine is an architect working at a prestigious firm. The narrative concludes with profound tragedy, as the characters struggle to cope with the lasting, destructive impact of Jude’s past.
A Little Life is characterized by its intense focus on pain, but it is also supported for its exploration of deep, platonic, and romantic love among the characters. I thought that this was the most intense, emotionally heavy book I have ever read. I felt a deep connection to all of the characters that I have never felt while reading a book before. I felt as though it had very hard material that may be sensitive for some readers as it talks about abuse, sexual assault and self harm. This book had a major impact on me and how I viewed life as it navigated through the lives of people who were struggling in silence and it made me aware of how little people know about other people’s lives. I believe that if you love tragic, platonic and romantic relationships in a book then this is perfect for you. I still think about the characters in this book and it had a very strong emotional effect on me as I felt so connected to the characters and their lives.
