After only being the coach of the New England Patriots for less than a year, the Patriots have fired Jerod Mayo. The first-year head coach had a 4 and 13 record with the team and right after the last game of the season, he was fired. He was a first-round draft pick for the Patriots in 2008 and after he retired in 2016, he became the inside linebacker coach for the Patriots in 2019. He was told that he would be the successor of Bill Belichick and five years after the Patriots and Bill parted ways, he became the coach. The thing that was interesting about this is Robert Kraft the Patriots’ owner did not conduct a proper head coaching search and just hired Mayo. After his first season when he was fired, he sent out a report saying how he knew what he did was wrong and did not put Jerod Mayo into a good coaching position and apologized to his family. The person that was favored to become the 16fh head coach of the Patriots was Mike Vrabel who was also someone who people wanted to become the 15th head coach of the Patriots but instead, Robert Kraft hired Mayo. Vrabel was also a linebacker for the Patriots from 2001 to 2008. He was also the coach who beat the Patriots in Tom Brady’s last game in a New England uniform. Everyone figured that Vrabel would be the next head coach of the Patriots and no one was surprised when he was hired. He gave his first press conference as the Patriots’ newest head coach and told the people that there would be a change in this organization which made people very happy because they were upset with the record last year. He also committed to doing his best to surround himself with great personnel. The players also really like this hire because they did not appreciate how Mayo would say random stuff to the press and different stuff to the players. It seems that there was a rift between the coaches and the players last year and Mike Vrabel would be able to get rid of that rift. Robert Kraft also came out and said that they were spending lots of money this off-season because the most cap space in the NFL was around 135 million and they were also bringing in new people to focus on drafting great players because they have the fourth pick in the NFL draft in April. This means they’re going to bring him better players from other organizations and better coaches to help make our players better. There is lots to look forward to in the Patriots’ upcoming season and hopefully they have a better record than 4 and 13 with Mike Vrabel and his new coaches that bring in a new offensive and defensive scheme with him. These upcoming years with a rookie quarterback that is projected to be a top-five quarterback in the NFL in a few years, and a great head coach who should never have been fired from Tennessee are all reasons for Patriots Nation to have a lot of hope. The ideal is to go from a 4:13 record to a playoff spot.
