The psychological thriller, The Housemaid came out this past December. The movie has become one of the most popular and talked about films of the season, drawing audiences of many age groups into the dark and twisty story. Directed by Paul Feig and featuring the actors, Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, the film premiered December 19, 2025 and has since become a critical and box office success. The Housemaid follows Millie Calloway, played by the actor Sydney Sweeney, a woman with a bad past who takes a live-in housekeeping job with a wealthy family on Long Island. All isn’t as it appears as Millie quickly uncovers something sinister in the family.
The film has a mix of psychological suspense and harrowing violence that keeps the viewers intrigued throughout the duration of the film. With Sydney Sweeney’s intense role and Amanda Seyfried playing Nina, the upper crust stay-at-home mom with unpredictable mood swings, The Housemaid combines two distinct actors in a way that is thrilling and suspenseful.
Adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, Sweeney and Seyfried who are ten years apart in age both fall under a certain category of pretty that sets up a fair comparison between the women. Millie fits the young woman, struggling financially, vulnerable, and in need of rescue or opportunity, which makes her easy to sympathize with. Nina, on the other hand, reflects the “perfect, wealthy housewife” stereotype, presenting a polished, blonde, upper-class image that hides emotional instability and control issues beneath the surface, both being a little stereotypical. While Sweeney’s character is more mellow, Seyfried’s energy is frenetic. It makes the audience sympathize with how Sweeney is being treated by her employer. The husband is a very successful man who is put together and is always on Millie’s side throughout the movie against his wife. He has sympathy for Millie and provides her with reassurance that she is doing the right thing, enraging his wife. The major plot twist provides a very dramatic change of mindset for the viewer and creates a totally different perspective on the characters. The setting connotes the idea that appearances can be deceiving. The large, beautiful, well-kept house suggests wealth, safety, and perfection on the outside but on the inside it creates a sense of isolation, control and uneasiness. It emphasizes the theme that behind perfect walls there can be secrets unrevealed.
While The Housemaid continues to play in theaters, fans are already looking forward to the sequel. The combination of strong actors and narrative plot twists has already become a standard thriller for a must see movie for 2026.
