Just under a year ago, Medway Girls Basketball had a terrific season and made it to the Final Four in the MIAA Division III State Tournament. Victoria Bullard, Anna Freeman, and Liv Melanson have all played for MHS since their freshman year and are leading the team as captains this season. Here is some input on last year’s and this year’s season from our captains:
What position do you play and how long have you been playing for MHS?
Anna: “I have been playing on MGVBB since freshman year as a Forward/Center.”
Victoria: “I am a small forward and I have been on varsity all 4 years”
What is the main goal of the team this season?
Anna: “Last year we were very successful. We were the #1 seed in the annual Westborough tournament and won that, and we also made a great run during playoffs, making it to the Final 4. This season, we are currently ranked #1 in Division 3 (8-4 record), and definitely want to continue to use that as our motivation to work as hard as we possibly can and hopefully make another deep run in the tournament.”
Victoria: “The main team goals for our season is to obviously go far in playoffs but also to be able to fight through all adversity together as a team.”
What are some of your personal goals?
Anna: “Some of my personal goals this season are to become more confident as a player all around. I have been working on shooting and driving to the basket more!”
Victoria: A few of my personal goals are to lead the team by example and support my teammates. I also want to hold myself accountable to my best effort in every game and practice.”
What do you think makes Medway have such a strong team and spirit?
Anna: “I think our bond as a team is what makes us so strong and connected. Everyone on the team contributes on and off the court, and we always have fun together, so when it comes to games we feel confident in one another that we have each other’s backs.”
Victoria: “I think Medway holds a strong team spirit due to how close everyone is and how we support each other by having best interests in each other. For game days our team participates in themes where we wear matching outfits according to the theme to get the spirit up for the game”
Liv: “The amazing thing about our basketball team is we all have individual connections with one another on and off the court. We care about each other both mentally and physically. I am so happy and grateful to play with an amazing group of girls.”
What motivates you and the team to keep going after a tough loss?
Anna: “After a tough loss, as a team, we keep our heads up. Obviously losing isn’t a great feeling, but we have to realize that it’s a part of our learning process, and we need to learn to grow from losing. It also brings us closer together as a team. We have to reflect, and like to review the issues we went through as a whole, and work on them during practice.”
Victoria: “After a tough loss our team has been so good about the next play and game mindset. As I’ve said we are so supportive of each other and that helps us strive to do better in the next game.”
What has been your favorite part/memory of the season so far?
Anna: “So far, my favorite part of the season so far has been getting sticker boards. Each player on our team has their own board and we write certain statistical goals we want for our games, as well as an individual section. After each game, we go through the stats, and put stickers where they are needed. During practices and games, we have opportunities to get personal sticklers too. I think this is a great way to motivate not only players individually but also as a team during games. This is such a fun way to show what we’ve accomplished and I’m glad we added it to our team dynamic.”
Victoria: “Having to pick one favorite memory of this season so far would be super hard considering every moment with my team is my favorite, but I’d say going out to get food as a team or our pre game locker room speeches before games.”
Liv: “My best memories with the team are our outings together after games, both wins and losses. This has become a great way to further develop team bonds.”
