Frankenstein Reimagined

A new interpretation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel

The Oscar nominated film Frankenstein directed by Guillermo del Toro, explores the complicated relationship Victor Frankenstein (played by Isaac Oscar) has with his want to defy death, as a result of the trauma of losing his mother at a young age. Frankenstein makes the decision to create The Creature (played by Jacob Elordi), and instead of embracing him with love and affection, he abuses and mistreats him, much like his father did to him. Lady Elizabeth, his brother’s fiancee,  (played by Mia Goth) however treats the creature with kindness and compassion, something he has never experienced before.

The cinematography of the film and the attention to detail in every scene shows the continuing theme of the consequences of playing God as well as the need for compassion. The sets are rich with symbolism from the blood red sheets to Elizabeth pure white wedding gown.

My favorite scene in the movie happens in the basement where The Creature was made to live. In the basement all alone, Lady Elizabeth finds The Creature and for the first time. The Creature experiences care, and gives Lady Elizabeth a leaf to show his gratitude.

Overall, I think the movie is beautifully filmed and executed, although confusing and overwhelmingly gory at times it remains enjoyable and captivating to watch. The underlying message of the importance of relationships and love, as well as breaking cycles of abuse are central to this adaptation.  is an important one. The ending leads the viewer to wonder who is the real monster?
