In 1947, Student Government Day was signed into law, providing an opportunity for educators and students from Massachusetts public and private high schools to learn firsthand about our state’s government, as well as participate in the legislative process and connect with their peers.
On April 4th, 2025, 350 seniors and juniors from across Massachusetts gathered at the State House on Beacon Hill to participate in Student Government Day. Student Government Day is an annual program organized by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education with the support of all three branches of state government. These 350 students spent the day learning from the government officials who came to the event, as well as participating in a simulated joint committee hearing. During the joint hearing, students discussed the “Act Promoting Safe Technology Use and Distraction-Free Education for Youth.” In the afternoon, these students split into three groups: the House, Senate, and Judicial Court. The groups simulating the House and Senate were able to hear from members of the executive branch and participated in a simulated debate in which they acted as legislators. The group simulating the Court spent their afternoon at the John Adams Courthouse, where they learned about the state judiciary and appellate processes from justices and law clerks.
Representing Medway High School at the State House were Michelle Pishchik (senior) and Giada Antonuccio (junior). The day provided an opportunity to connect with peers who have similar interests in government, as well as hear from State Representatives and judges about their experiences in government and their reasons for becoming government officials. Michelle and Giada were lucky enough to meet and receive citations from State Representative Jeff Roy, who represents precincts 2, 3, and 4 of Medway.
