Review: Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet

Pop star Sabrina Carpenter leaves quite an impression with releasing her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet. This album is a pop-based record, with hints of country and R&B. Short n’ Sweet was released on Friday, August 23, 2024. Before releasing this album, Sabrina released two singles off the album – “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” Both have been major hits, and got people excited about the release of this album.

Shortly after the release of Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina Carpenter released a music video for the first track, “Taste.” In this video, Sabrina Carpenter and American actress Jenna Ortega are competing for a guy’s attention. Jenna Ortega is playing the role of a girl, who is an ex of the guy Sabrina was previously with. Jenna then goes back to the guy, and Sabrina sings about how she was just an in-between fling. Sabrina continues to explain that even though she was just a fling, she will always be there and always be in Jenna’s head. Throughout the video, Jenna and Sabrina both try to “harm” each other. In the end, Jenna accidentally kills the guy, thinking it is Sabrina. They then both go to his funeral and afterward, they bond over the things they don’t like about the guy. The idea of this music video is very creative and has very realistic editing. Overall, this music video is a witty and sassy version of the song “Taste,” and I would definitely recommend watching it.

Sabrina Carpenter’s whole discography is very catchy, and her songs are easily likable. Although I enjoy all of the songs off of Short n’ Sweet, my favorite from this record would have to be “Lie To Girls.” This song is saying that there is no need to lie in relationships, as girls will lie to themselves or ignore problems in their relationship to make the situation better in their heads, despite how messed up a person has been to them. It is saying that girls will avoid the truth in exchange for a “healthy” relationship. A line that sticks out to me in this song is “We love to mistake butterflies for cardiac arrest.” This specific line means that people get so stressed and worked up about relationships, that they pretend the stress is just a part of relationships in a loveable way. It is saying that girls normalize panic in relationships because they tell themselves that it is good. I would recommend this song to anyone who has been in a relationship and feels the need to change certain situations in their head to make the relationship seem better than it is.

Since the release of this album, Sabrina has announced that she is going on tour for this album. She kicked off opening night in Columbus Ohio, on the 23rd of September. Sabrina plans to visit 29 different cities throughout North America and then plans to visit stadiums throughout Europe. She plans to come to Boston on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024. Sabrina has shown to be fun and playful with her tour and interacts with her audience a lot. The setlist for this tour a the moment includes all of the songs off of Short n’ Sweet, along with a few songs from her 5th studio album, Emails I Can’t Send. The songs featured from her 5th studio album are: “Tornado Warnings,” “decode,” “Feather,” “Fast Times,” “Read Your Mind,” “Opposite,” “Because I liked a boy,” and “Nonsense.” These are all songs I’d definitely recommend listening to when you get the chance.

Overall, I’d highly recommend listening to Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter, as it is an upbeat, fun, and relatable album. It has a very diverse mix of tunes, and Sabrina includes funny, along with clever lyrics.
