Medway’s Music Department is back at it again with their annual pops concert! This year, there is a plethora of ensembles and club music groups, including the percussion ensemble, jazz band, a cappella, MMS Jazz band and many more. The Medway Concert Band will tackle a Michael Jackson theme in their medley, while the choir will perform a Disney medley. The Pops concert is often regarded as one of the highlights of Medway Music’s calendar. The event began with a Spring Art Exhibit from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, featuring stunning visual artwork by students, setting the tone for an evening that celebrated creative expression in all its forms. At 7:00 PM, the musical portion commenced.
The night opened with MHS and MMS Jazz Bands under the direction of Amanda Webster and Erin Cronan, delivering an energetic blend of big band hits. Selections included the iconic Muppets Theme (arr. Nowak), Birdland (arr. Berry), and Big Noise from Winnetka (arr. Lavender). Their tight rhythms and lively solos brought cheers from the crowd. The MHS Percussion Ensemble led by Amanda Webster brought a whimsical flair to the evening with Mah-Ná Mah-Ná by Umiliani, a play on the classic Muppet Show skit that left the audience smiling and tapping along.
Under the direction of Ashley Nelson-Oneschuk, the MHS A Cappella ensemble impressed with their vocal control and harmonic excellence. Their performances of Blue Moon (arr. Raugh/Sharon) and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (arr. Sergeant) were well received. The MHS Combined Chords accompanied by pianist Maria White, entertained with their Disney Dazzle (arr. Huff), a medley that was performed costumes and choreography. The song celebrated beloved Disney melodies. The Choir performed a range of selections that demonstrated both technical skill and emotional depth.
The Concert Band, conducted by Amanda Webster, brought the night to a touching close with dynamic renditions of Michael Jackson Hit Mix (arr. Vinson), The Rainbow Connection (arr. Moss), and a dramatic interpretation of How To Train Your Dragon (arr. O’Loughlin), showcasing the group’s versatility and musical growth.
Towards the middle of the night, seniors were recognized for all the hard work and dedication they have put towards the Medway Music department. They were awarded the Director’s Award for Band and Choir Excellence, honoring their leadership, commitment, and passion for music throughout their high school careers.
